BRITISH YARN INDUSTRY "HAS MADE GREAT STRIDES"

Wool made in Great Britain has a range of uses and serves a greater variety of purposes than many individuals realise.

Bridgette Kelly, public relations manager for the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB), explains: "People seem to think that all wool is the same and that all wool goes into jumpers, but that's not true of British wool."

She says the country's yarn industry has recently "made great strides", with yarn spinners and those who finish the cloth coming together to create a high-quality end product.

In the past, the sector suffered somewhat when consumers started looking for disposable clothing that may not last as long as quality items.

But Ms Kelly believes this approach has started to change and it is no longer true that people simply want to purchase the cheapest item without thinking about the consequences.

Some 59,078 people are registered producers within the BWMB and nine different regions of the UK are represented by the members.
