CHILDREN 'CAN BE TAUGHT ABOUT SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS'
Wearing clothing made from sustainable materials is a good way to start becoming more eco friendly.
And children can be taught the importance of this attitude from a young age, a writer believes.
"Children are quick to grasp concepts and they understand that buying clothes made from polluting, artificial fibres made by child labour in third-world countries is no great thing," explains Sally Hall, writing for the Independent.
Another way to encourage sustainability is to buy eco clothing then swap garments with family and friends once youngsters outgrow the items.
Ms Hall says recycling is also an option, as is customising clothes and turning them into other items once they are no longer suitable to wear.
The trend for this approach to fashion may have resulted from the recession, when a 'make-do-and-mend' approach became popular.
This may also explain the rising popularity of clothing made in Great Britain, a trend a writer for the London Evening Standard recently said has prospered during the economic downturn.
