Sustainable materials used to make eco clothing may be in higher demand if more people were aware of the ethical fashion industry.

According to Una Hussey, studying for a master's in fashion and environment at the London College of Fashion, Britons should learn more about this sector.

Speaking at the Clothes Show London, she said: "What we in the ethical fashion industry need to do is to make ethical fashion more accessible to the consumer."

There is currently a culture of "throwaway fashion" and many people dispose of their clothing at landfill sites, Ms Hussey continued.

Britons are now more conscious of eco clothing than they were in the past, but further work still needs to be done to alter the present attitude, she added.

Her comments follow research from Mintel published last month, which revealed almost four in ten consumers planned to spend more on clothing this year and will invest in quality items, such as those made in Great Britain from sustainable materials.
