A growing number of consumers are taking ethical issues into consideration when purchasing items such as a mens jumper or ladies cashmere jumper.

This is according to associate director of the Ethical Fashion Forum Josie Nicholson, who noted "many shoppers are putting more consideration into what they buy".

Trends seem to be shifting towards purchasing "quality pieces that stand the test of time", she observed, adding this is likely to be a reaction to both the recession and rising prices and is expected to continue once the economic recovery has taken place.

And Ms Nicholson urged brands to take advantage of this new approach consumers have towards clothes, stating they should work on building "good, stable, long-term relationships" with their suppliers and adopt a more responsible strategy when purchasing materials.

Her comments come after Daily Mail writer Liz Jones encouraged the public to follow Prince Charles's recent suggestion and move towards purchasing sustainable clothing.
