ETHICAL CLOTHING 'MUST STAND UP IN MARKETPLACE'
Ethical clothing chosen to feature in the UK's leading fashion magazines can stand up on its own, according to an expert.
Melanie Rickey, fashion editor for Grazia magazine, spoke at London's Esethica forum recently held at Somerset House.
She said the magazine picks ethical clothing that looks as good as other items on the high street, with the added benefit of its eco background.
"It's important that the clothes stand up on their own in the marketplace otherwise people won't want them," Ms Rickey explains.
This means shoppers will be encouraged to purchase the clothing for its ethical credentials as well as its relevance to fashion.
According to the V&A Museum website, these items cover issues such as working conditions, fair-trade and the environment.
There now exists many industrialised ways of growing cotton, allowing fabric to be made at a low cost and high quantity.
But this can mean less money goes to those producing the clothing when the pieces are sold at very low prices on the high street, the site claims.
