One environmental expert has outlined why she believes ethical clothing are such important products.

Penny Nash, founder of a Canadian website which focuses on how people can reduce their carbon footprint and shop in a more sustainable manner, explained her reasons for backing such items.

She said that having read about how consumers and manufacturers were impacting on the planet, she was inspired to get more involved in highlighting the things people can do to combat the issue.

Ms Nash went on to say that many people are under the impression that organic clothing is something which "is trivial in the grand scheme of saving the environment", but added this was not the case.

"Growing and harvesting these materials has much less long-term impact … and it lowers our carbon footprint," she concluded.

Designer Stella McCartney emphasised her support for ethical clothing this week in an article for the Guardian, where she encouraged the fashion industry to live up to its reputation for change in adopting more planet-friendly practices.
