ETHICAL CLOTHING SEEKERS ADVISED TO CHECK CREDENTIALS
A recent article has suggested that while ethical clothing is a popular choice for many, seeking out trusted retailers is always a good idea.
It was advised in a piece for The Houston Chronicle last week that a number of US-based firms have seen sales of their products soar as the public become more aware of sustainable processes.
The publication explained this has led a number of larger companies making claims regarding how their materials are sourced and their apparel is put together that may not hold much weight.
Citing advice from Honor Schauland, a campaign assistant for the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), it was noted that consumers can "combat hollow claims" by conducting their own research.
In addition, LaRhea Pepper, senior director of the Organic Exchange, said such false advertising would soon be on the way out - as firms are becoming forced to supply items that make the grade.
"The pendulum is swinging," Ms Pepper warned. "Companies can no longer close their eyes and sleep ignorant. There is a shift to be socially responsible."
According to its website, the OCA works to eliminate the false labelling of items like ethical clothing - a process often referred to as greenwashing.
