FAIRTRADE CLOTHING TO BE SEEN IN NHS
Fairtrade clothing could soon be seen in hospitals, hotels and schools as efforts are being made to boost sales.
The Times reported today (December 29th) that ethical foundation Fairtrade has approached various organisations such as the NHS in a bid to increase sales of fairtrade cotton.
Head of non-food business development at Fairtrade Victoria Morton said that British retailers had bought less fairtrade cotton in the past year thanks to the recession.
But the foundation is now looking at other ways to turn this around.
Hotels have been approached after a trial in Amsterdam at Hotel Dorint saw entire rooms kitted out with fairtrade products such as bed linen and towels.
A deal has been made between Fairtrade and NHS Supply Chain - a supplier of non-medical products to approximately 450 NHS trusts.
Items such as scrubs, lab suits and T-shirts will be made by the Organic Medical Clothing Company using fair-trade cotton.
NHS Supply Chain's Andrew Brentnall said: "Sustainability is becoming of increasing importance to trusts and sourcing Fairtrade products is a good way of bringing it in."
According to its website, the company manages the procurement and delivery of 620,000 products for over 600 healthcare organisations.
