FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS IN 'INCREASING DEMAND'
Fairtrade clothing may be increasing in popularity, after it was announced that demand for ethical goods is rising despite the recession.
Co-editor of Ethical Consumer Magazine Dan Welch said: "The Fairtrade logo consistently has high brand recognition."
If people go to buy something and see this label they know exactly what it means, he stated.
People are also willing to pay more to know that a product has been ethically sourced and produced.
"Internationally, 30 to 40 per cent of respondents say they will pay an ethical premium," Mr Welch explained.
There is an increasing number of people he calls dedicated ethical consumers, who provide the majority of custom for Fairtrade products.
Such groups are also campaigning for ethical causes and can effect government legislation, Mr Welch continued.
On January 11th the Co-operative Group noted that Fairtrade products had seen excellent increases in sales.
A rise of 36 per cent was reported among Fairtrade wines and a 26 per cent increase seen among confectionary sporting the logo.
