GREEN AGENDA 'HAS HELPED WOOL KNITWEAR SECTOR'
Wool knitwear retailers may have noted a rising interest in environmental matters, which could have benefited their organisations.
According to Bridgette Kelly, public relations manager for the British Wool Marketing Board, the "green agenda" has helped the wool industry.
She says this approach began with organic food and more people began to consider the provenance of the items they consume.
This attitude spread to the clothing industry, Ms Kelly continues, with the recession adding to a desire to look after "your home turf and territory".
Ethical clothing is ideal for those with "good values", such as making a stand against sweatshops or wanting to support the country's textile market, she adds.
Tamara Sender, senior fashion analyst at Mintel, recently suggested this was the case, after claiming British shoppers are purchasing "quality over quantity".
She stated people are more likely to spend a larger sum of money on items that will last, rather than investing in disposable fashion.
