ONLINE SHOPPING FOR WOOL KNITWEAR MAY HAVE BOOSTED FIGURES

British shoppers purchasing items of wool knitwear and other garments may have headed online, sales figures have indicated.

IMRG/Capgemini revealed its latest e-Retail Sales Index, which found total online sales in June rose by one-fifth compared with the previous year.

Clothing was responsible for a large part of this, with a rise of 22 per cent in sales since 2009.

Sarah Peters, retail analyst for Verdict, said: "Buying online is a quick and easy way of getting summer clothing without having to spend time traipsing around the shops."

Consumers could find that retailers such as Celtic Sheepskin - which sells items made from sustainable material - offer a more pleasant method of shopping than crowded high streets during the summer months.

Another reason for the rise in online sales could have been the World Cup, when people wanted to spend more time indoors, Ms Peters stated.

She added people are taking more consideration when making a purchase in order to ensure they get an item that will last.
