SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS MAY BE OF INTEREST TO NEW DESIGNERS
The textile industry in Portugal has raised its standards following its joining with the eurozone, it has been reported.
According to the Financial Times, textile production in the country has declined because of a loss of business to eastern Europe, northern Africa and Asia - all low-cost manufacturing centres.
However, as a result, the textile and yarn industry has had to improve its operations and such an approach could be channelled by young designers.
Pedro Noronha-Feio, a designer who studied at the London School of Fashion, told the newspaper he has learnt the practical side of sewing lines and cutting rooms.
Here, he may have developed knowledge about the increasing popularity of sustainable materials such as wool and organic cotton.
"Textile and clothing manufacturers - and shoemakers - use more efficient production techniques these days and turn out more sophisticated designs and higher quality products than during the low-cost decades," the publication noted.
The Textile Institute has corporate and individual members in up to 80 countries and aims to facilitate learning and promote sustainability in the footwear, clothing and textiles industries.
