Men's knitwear made from wool in West Cumbria could prove popular with those who like their clothes to be made that little bit closer to home.

The recent Lakeland Shears event hosted sheep shearers from around the world who competed to see who was the best at their job.

According to the Times and Star, the contest - which aims to promote the region as important to the wool industry - saw 1,000 Herdwick sheep provided by four local farms that also allowed the sustainable material to be donated.

Secretary of Lakeland Shears Bob Shaw told the newspaper it tries to promote the craft "to young people as a lot of the older folk are retiring".

"It's on the world calendar now and a lot of guys look forward to it. It's the biggest shearing competition in Britain," he added.

The British Wool Marketing Board lists the event in its calendar, along with Cneifio Bro Ddyfi Shears and Devon County Lamb.
