WOOL KNITWEAR RECYCLING RATES 'HAVE TO INCREASE'

Councils could do more to improve wool knitwear and other textiles recycling rates, it has been said.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com, president of the Textile Recycling Association (TRA) Gerald Cemmell said local authorities should work with charities and clothing collectors to ensure more garments are re-used.

Existing structures cannot deal with extra clothing, but this is a challenge councils could help to overcome.

By recycling wool knitwear, Britons could be sure their clothing is disposed of in an efficient way, as well as allowing the garments to be made into other items.

Mr Cemmell told the website: "Less than one per cent of the UK's 200,000 charities have shops and if local authorities develop collection systems it could open up a whole new fundraising stream for many charities."

The TRA has many aims, one of which is to promote the second-hand shoe and clothing industry and textile recycling.

It also represents its members on a local, national and international scale.
