Representatives from the yarn industry gathered yesterday (July 21st) at the Royal Welsh Show for the final day of the Golden Shears World Championships.

The contest saw shearers collect piles of wool as they rapidly worked their way through the sustainable material from a number of sheep.

Cam Ferguson from New Zealand won the machine shearing event, with fellow Kiwi David Fagan taking second place.

Buyers of wool made in Great Britain may have been pleased to see Welsh competitor Bronwen Tango awarded the world wool handling trophy.

Ms Tango scooped the individual prize in her home country, while Gareth Daniel and Gareth Evans - also from Wales - collected third and fourth-place awards in the machine shearing contest.

Organisers of the show from the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society described the atmosphere last night as "comparable only to being in the Millennium Stadium for a rugby international".

The event - which began on July 19th - ends today and has already had almost 177,000 visitors.
