David Cameron and Nick Clegg both dressed in men's knitwear as they attempted to win votes over the weekend (April 10th-12th).

Conservative Party leader Cameron chose a "merino wool number", the Guardian reveals.

He wore the dark blue knitwear over a similarly-coloured shirt and combined it with black trousers.

"The fine wool sweater is the classic dressed-down-but-smart trick," the writer explains.

And Liberal Democrat leader Clegg opted for a V-neck jumper, which was also worn over a shirt.

He combined this with "not-quite jeans", the publication adds.

It seems knitwear is a popular fashion statement for many involved in the upcoming General Election, with the party leaders' wives also opting for a similar look.

Last week Sarah Brown was seen wearing a yellow cardigan as she helped husband Gordon Brown campaign for the Labour Party.

Previously Samantha Cameron had been spotted wearing a brown knitted cardigan, according to the Daily Mail.ADNFCR-2444-ID-19716191-ADNFCR
