KNITWEAR IS DECORATING NEWCASTLE DURING SCIENCEFEST
Ladies and men's knitwear will be dotted around Newcastle over the coming week, as the city hosts the annual ScienceFest.
Knitted scarves, gloves, hats and all sorts of other woollen items will be placed at various locations in the city by so-called guerrilla knitters.
The Maker Faire is just one of the events at the Newcastle ScienceFest 2010, which encourages craftspeople to come to the city and celebrate their arts.
Manager of the festival Marissa Buckingham told the Newcastle Chronicle: "We have been delighted by the sheer originality and talent of the crafters who have been decorating Newcastle in the lead-up to Maker Faire."
Guerilla knitters have already been hard at work and knitwear is decorating lampposts and sculptures across the country.
One such knitter is 58-year-old Margaret Montgomery, who said that it is a good way for people to get together and have a laugh.
The craze is thought to have started when knitters in Texas were looking for a way to get rid of their extra yarn.
And it is popular today in Canada, particularly during Ottowa's annual Winterlude festival when CBC reported that knitters were dressing trees and benches in items of knitwear.
