STRONG SUPPORT FOR WOOL MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN

A petition to back farmers who produce wool made in Great Britain during the London 2012 Olympic Games has attracted over 1,000 signatures.

Consumers who purchase men's jumpers have been encouraged to choose woollen clothes with a UK production history in order to reverse the fortunes of British manufacturers.

According to the National Farmers' Union (NFU), Yorkshire wool merchant Martin Curtis is trying to get wool into the Olympics by creating carpets from the material designed especially for the sporting event.

Malcolm Corbett, NFU livestock board member and representative for the British Wool Marketing Board, said: "Wool has been in the doldrums for too long, with the result that farm gate prices have not even covered the cost of clipping."

The north-east recently hosted the annual Northumberland County Show at Corbridge, which featured the English Shearer of the Year competition organised by the British Alpaca Society.
