UK CONSUMERS 'WILL PAY MORE FOR ETHICAL CLOTHING'

An RSA report named Green Appetites has asked people from all over the world their thoughts on purchasing environmentally or socially-responsible products.

It was revealed that across Britain, 35 per cent of people admitted that spending between one and five per cent extra for things like fair trade clothing was not a problem.

Further to this, 11 per cent of respondents said they would be willing to shell out five to ten per cent more money and one per cent said they would push this to over the 10 per cent mark.

Dr Paul Pritchard, UK head of corporate responsibility at RSA, said that although there were "subtle differences" between different nations' attitudes to such products, overall the news was positive.

"It demonstrates very clearly that … these concerns are important to consumers across many countries," he added.

Despite this, an article for the Houston Chronicle this week pointed out that although many used to believe ethical clothing to be a more costly option, this is no longer the case.
