Wool knitwear can now be created from a variety of materials with different qualities.

Buyers could find alpaca wool provides more insulation than textiles originating from sheep, according to breeder Lynn Zoellner.

"The great thing about alpacas is the wool is supposedly two to three times warmer than sheep wool and it doesn't have the scratch," she was quoted by the Farm Forum as saying.

Ms Zoellner owns an alpaca farm in South Dakota, US, with five males and two females providing wool to be spun into knitwear.

Wool is commonly taken from the back and belly of the animals, which originate in South America and are closely related to llamas.

This type of yarn is best used for knitwear such as sweaters, because it is finer than that from other areas of the body.

The lower legs of alpacas provide wool that is coarser, but can be transformed into items such as rugs, the website notes.
