Keith Ovens has worked in the Merino wool industry for 32 years and was given the Heather Perriam Memorial Award in recognition of his efforts.

The Otago Merino Association awards saw Mr Ovens receive the accolade, the Otago Daily Times revealed.

Perhaps explaining his enthusiasm for the wool and yarn industry is the fact Mr Ovens has come from a line of similar employees.

The publication noted his father was a wool buyer for 45 years and he allowed his son to assist him with his work.

"Those observations, he said, gave him an understanding of wool processing that were to assist him later in life," the article explained.

Mr Ovens went on to study a wool course at Lincoln University and continued to progress in the sector, before receiving the latest award.

Merino wool is used for a variety of clothing, ranging from luxurious socks to cosy children's garments.
