Increased security on flights travelling to and from the United States means that some travellers may wish to bundle up in knitwear before making way to the airport.

According to the GateHouse News Service, Cheapflights has recommended that passengers dress in layers to stay warm on board the aircraft.

The Boston-based group noted that this may be particularly important advice for people taking overnight flights, as some airlines are not permitting passengers to cover their laps with pillows or blankets.

It also advised that travellers should be prepared to "get cosy" at the airport due to the increased likelihood of delays. In addition to packing knitwear items, portable DVD players, books and a fully-charged iPod may all be useful items to have on hand.

Last month, Daily Record columnist Jerry Hall commented that men's knitwear items such as sweaters, which can be layered warmly, are wise things to pack when flying long-haul, in addition to lip balm, hand sanitizer, chewing gum, tissues and plenty of snacks.
