Knitwear will be the topic of conversation at a conference in September, which is to be held at Shetland Museum.

In the loop 2: knitting origins and evolution is due to be held from September 1st-4th and the conference is a joint venture between the University of Southampton and the museum hosting the event.

Linda Newington, from the university, was quoted by the Shetland Times saying the islands seemed to be the ideal place to hold the international conference on knitting.

And Ms Newington will hold presentations on knitwear, as well as other speakers discussing issues surrounding the industry.

"We also want to investigate knitting cultures from other parts of the world, to provide a global perspective on how traditional knitting has influenced contemporary makers, artists and researchers," she was quoted as saying.

The announcement about the convention follows reports of an end to knitting tuition in primary schools, in a cost-cutting move by Shetland Islands Council. ADNFCR-2444-ID-19771993-ADNFCR
