Workers in the wool knitwear industry have received the backing of Irish MEP Mairead McGuinness.

She warns that many small wool merchants fear new European regulations could damage their business.

The legislation concerning transportation, storage and collection of animal by-products will come into force in March next year and Ms McGuinness explains many Irish firms could be negatively affected.

She asked EU health and policy commissioner John Dalli whether the current rules concerning wool might be disproportionate to the risk involved.

Ms McGuinness states: "Good regulation is essential to protect health. However, the EU must be careful to ensure that compliance requirements do not disproportionately disadvantage small and medium enterprises in favour of large mechanised operators."

These larger firms have more resources than smaller companies and can afford to invest in facilities that others cannot, she adds.

Earlier this year, the MEP encouraged anybody with an interest in agricultural and rural issues to make their views known on the EU website, in an aim to discover opinions on the Common Agricultural Policy beyond 2013.
