The merino wool industry could be about to see some changes after a new president was elected to chair the World Federation of Merino Breeders.

Robert Ashby from Australia is himself a stud merino breeder and took over the role as president from Glen Keamy, Farm Weekly reports.

Ladies and men's knitwear made from the material may become more widespread under the new president's leadership, it was noted

"I […] am looking forward to working in cooperation with other organisations to reinvigorate and restore wool to a position as the preferred apparel fibre," the publication quoted Mr Ashby as saying.

The appointment was made at the 8th World Merino Conference in France, which was held at the Bergerie Nationale in Ramouillet.

Mr Ashby recognised the work of his predecessor and the enthusiasm shown for the merino industry.

During the meeting in Ramouillet, Mr Keamy was awarded an accolade for this service, the publication revealed.
