Merino wool is receiving the attention of shearers in Australia, who are practising for an upcoming contest in Wales.

Held between July 19th and 21st, the Golden Shears World Shearing Championship will take place at the Royal Welsh Show in Powys, Wales.

The Australian shearing team is used to dealing with Merinos, champion Jason Wingfield was quoted by ABC as saying.

But the wool at the Welsh championships will come from crossbreds, he explained.

This means it is important to practise on a variety of sheep, Mr Wingfield stated, adding the team will have five weeks to try their techniques on Welsh animals before the contest begins.

"It's just a matter of getting your eye-hand coordination up to their level," he claimed.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the Royal Welsh Show, where crafts, farm animals and flowers are just some of the items on display.

British agriculture is celebrated at the event, with 7,000 livestock entries made, according to Visit Wales.
