SUPPORT FOR WOOL KNITWEAR AT OLYMPICS
The wool knitwear industry has received the support of almost 1,000 people who would like to see the sector represented at the London Olympics.
Some 977 people signed a petition from the National Farmers' Union (NFU) to see British wool at the Games, the Morpeth Herald reported.
The appeal was made at the Northumberland County Show - held at Corbridge on May 31st - and has the backing of supporters such as Hexham MP Guy Opperman.
Chairman of the NFU East Livestock Board Hans Porksen said: "It is essential we do everything possible to highlight the unique properties of such a versatile, natural and sustainable resource."
This is even more important at a time when wool prices are low and farmers find it difficult to meet essential costs such as shearing, he added.
Mr Porksen thanked all those who had signed the appeal and said the petition will now be extended and taken to other areas and cities during the summer.
