SUPPORT WOOL KNITWEAR AT NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY SHOW
Wool knitwear could become more popular if proposals by British farmers are given the go-ahead.
During the Northumberland County Show on May 31st, there will be a petition on the National Farmers Union (NFU) stand, the Journal reports.
Under this lobby, farmers are asking for organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games to showcase the country's wool.
The sustainable material is often more environmentally friendly than synthetic alternatives and the wool industry wants to highlight this issue.
Sheep farmer and chairman of the NFU regional livestock board Hans Porksen, said: "Wool has a great story to tell - not least its green credentials, its unique natural properties and its versatility."
Mr Porksen, who works in Morpeth, stated the north-east has four million animals grazing in the region and welcomed any initiatives aimed at protecting the industry.
London was chosen to host the 2012 Games after fighting off competition from global cities such as Paris and New York.
