SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL 'HELPED BY CHEMICAL'
Demand for organic cotton is increasing and this has led to a growth in planting and production, it has been reported.
The SouthEast Farm Press noted over the past few years, organic cotton associations have spoken about the surge in popularity of the sustainable material.
Organic cotton has to meet certain standards regarding non-chemical insect control, with methods including border vegetation management.
However, according to the publication, the boll weevil - a beetle - needs to be tackled with a more robust method and an organophosphate called malathion has helped cotton producers.
"As we get closer and closer to the day when weevils are completely eradicated, organic cotton producers are increasing acreage and production, albeit it's still only a fraction of the total crop," the report noted, adding used responsibly it has limited impact on the environment.
The Organic Trade Association stated organic production systems help to maintain and replenish soil fertility, as well as reduce the use of toxic fertilisers and pesticides.
