SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS 'POPULAR DURING RECESSION'

Sustainable materials and eco clothing were popular during the recession, when many industries were struggling, according to a report.

Organic Exchanges's (OE) Organic Cotton Market Report 2009 found sales of this material increased by 35 per cent over the year.

LaRhea Pepper, senior director of OE and co-author of the report, said many industry insiders thought the economic downturn would mean fewer people purchased organic goods.

However, the opposite was found to be true. "Consumers dug in their heels and continued to support the use of organic cotton and other sustainable fibres," Ms Pepper continued.

According to many experts, there appears to be a trend for using sustainable material and thinking about the consequences of purchases made.

A recent article in the Daily Telegraph stated ladies' knitwear is one of the textiles ideal for using again and again.

One designer, Elizabeth Cook, told the publication she takes the material and creates new items, such as rugs, blankets and cushion covers.
