SUSTAINABLE WOOL IS A "TOUGH" MATERIAL
Wool knitwear is often chosen for its soft nature and cosy quality, which can make it ideal for clothing.
But the material is also highly durable and "tough", according to Hans Porksen, National Farmers' Union north-east livestock board chairman and Morpeth farmer.
"Cruise liners around the Caribbean have wool carpets and all the Las Vegas casinos have wool carpets to cope with the big industrial cleaners that artificial fibres can't", he explained to the Journal.
This is just one of the aspects of the sustainable material that those working in the wool industry are currently highlighting.
Northumberland farmer Malcolm Corbett, the Northern representative for the British Wool Marketing Board, was quoted by the publication noting the loss of demand for wool.
But he and other farmers are attempting to revive the industry and make more people aware of its benefits.
A sheep-shearing contest at the annual Northumberland County Show last month may have educated visitors on the process of creating wool knitwear.
