Wool knitwear is being created at an initiative encouraging people to pick up their knitting needles for charity.

The Spin a Yarn with Giaan events are organised by the 2010 Guardian Angel knitting programme in Australia.

Knitters can head to any participating Guardian Pharmacy, where they are asked to collect patterns enabling them to create clothing made from the sustainable material.

The items must then be given back to the pharmacy before July 31st and the clothing is donated to charity.

Locals from Balwyn North, Victoria, last week attended an event as part of the scheme and knitted a number of items, such as blankets, scarves and warm clothes.

Host and Olympic medallist Giaan Rooney was quoted by the Progress Leader as saying: "I'm really excited about being involved in an event that supports Australians in need, while incorporating a well-known and much-loved craft like knitting."

Organisers have introduced an added incentive for participants, who can enter a knit-off to decide who has the "niftiest needlework skills", with the winner awarded a prize.
