WOOL KNITWEAR "HAS A COCOONING EFFECT"
The popularity of wool knitwear could be down to the qualities of the material, according to an expert.
"Knitwear has a cocooning effect – people want things to be as soft as possible … People do want a sensuality with knitwear," says Christine Loy, design consultant and knitwear tutor at Northumbria University, the Journal reports.
And Ms Loy states this type of clothing should be made in Great Britain to create items that are "a bit special".
The trend for throwaway fashion that has hit the high street in recent years is unlikely to continue, with wool knitwear offering an alternative.
Ms Loy believes the sustainable material can be seen as a clothing investment and gives buyers a product that will last for a long time.
In the past, many manufacturers in the UK have used wool from countries such as Australia, but importing the material is not necessary, she adds.
Smaller businesses are the key to altering this approach, as they can create interesting goods that are different to mass-market options, Ms Loy continues.
Her comments follow reports from the National Famers' Union of a petition for British-made wool to be promoted during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
