WOOL KNITWEAR TEACHES PUPILS A LESSON
Wool knitwear is being crafted by children in the US in order to help a charity project and teach pupils some valuable lessons.
According to the Providence Journal, knitting gives children important maths skills and the initiative also helps a charity project aimed at creating baby blankets to send to hospitals in Afghanistan.
Primary school teacher Carolyn Windham introduced the scheme to St Andrew's School, Barrington, after reading Three Cups of Tea, which explains how knitting the blankets could changes lives in the country.
Julia Boyce, aged ten, told the publication: "I already knew how to knit, so I asked to help other people."
She added the craft is also fun because "you can make lots of things you can actually use".
The news follows recent reports that schools in the Shetland Islands would no longer offer tuition on how to make knitwear because local councils were forced to cut the lessons in order to save money.
