The beginnings of wool knitwear creation were exhibited at an event held in New York on Monday (July 26th).

In order to create items made from the sustainable material, wool first needs to be spun into yarn.

And locals gathered to do just that at the nocturnal event, which saw musicians, craftspeople and dancers gather to practise their arts in the street, the New York Times reports.

Spin City is described by the publication as "a group of wool-spinning enthusiasts, who chatted and quietly whirled spindles of fluff into yarn".

The writer explained fresh sheep wool is carded by some members of the Spin City group, while others spin various colours of the sustainable material.

Organiser Donna Panner stated the practice "is addictive", with many people continuing until the light became too dim.

Before wool can be spun, it must first go through the process of carding, which allows excess dirt, tangles and knots to be removed to enable the sustainable material to move onto the next stage.
