Those working in the yarn industry may be pleased to hear the claims of one farmer, who believes the trade is doing well.

Bruce Atkinson said: "The wool industry is not dead. It's alive and well."

The Australian farmer was quoted by the Land, after a shearing day was held at his North Tuppal woolshed, which is more than 100 years old.

He and his family restored the building, where many sheep were sheared at the recent event.

Mr Atkinson stated the shearing was "joyous" and he was pleased with the turnout, which shows the strength of the wool industry.

The property was previously owned by the farmer's father and holds thousands of sheep, including Merinos.

Merino wool is commonly used in knitwear such as baby clothes, as its texture lends itself to comfort.

The soft nature of the fibre means it can be used to create luxurious items of men's and ladies' knitwear.
