COULD SHETLAND KNITWEAR BE UNDER THREAT?

Knitwear and the craft of knitting itself have become popular with celebrities and should continue to be promoted in British schools.

This is according to Marion Davidson, chairwoman of the Scottish Women's Rural Institutes (SWRI), who is pleading with the Shetland Islands Council not to cut education on the art.

Her comments follow reports from the council that knitting tuition in primary schools would be ended in order to save £130,000 in the authority's education budget.

But this could mean famous knitwear from the region would suffer as a result.

"The only way that traditional skills can remain alive is by passing it to young people," says Ms Davidson.

And she cites the likes of Madonna and Julia Roberts - known to enjoy knitting as a hobby - as an example of how times have changed.

The SWRI has approximately 22,000 members and considers itself one of Scotland's largest women's organisations.ADNFCR-2444-ID-19766553-ADNFCR
