The UK fashion industry directly contributes nearly £21 billion to the economy, a new report from the British Fashion Council (BFC) has revealed.

Items such as mens jumpers and ladies cashmere jumpers have helped make the clothing industry the 15th largest in the UK, ahead of automotive retail, sports and chemical manufacturing.

In addition, fashion provides a further £16 million in the form of having indirect effects on other sectors, such as IT and tourism.

The BFC noted the growth of sustainable clothing lines has been partially responsible for the constant evolution of the industry and minister for the creative industries Ed Vaizey said Britain "has the talent, creativity and skills to rival anywhere in the world" in this field.

He added: "This new research … confirms British fashion's status as one of our most important creative industries."

The BFC, which was established in 1983, has published the report ahead of London Fashion Week, which gets underway tomorrow (September 17th).
