LADIES' KNITWEAR COULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO "RECORD-BREAKING" WOOL DEMAND
Women who have purchased ladies' knitwear may have contributed to high demand for wool this year.
According to the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB), there has been "record-breaking" demand for the sustainable material, meaning prices have risen to the highest level in ten years.
Chief executive officer of the body Ian Hartley said: "Our wool producers will benefit from the substantial increase in auction prices over the last 12 months."
They will be receiving a higher-than-normal wool cheque in recognition of the soaring prices, the BWMB added.
Mr Hartley said the organisation predicts the situation will continue for the rest of the year and hopefully for the foreseeable future.
Perhaps an additional explanation for the current positive climate in the wool and yarn industry is the launch of the Campaign for Wool.
The movement - of which the Prince of Wales is patron - aims to promote the sustainable material and benefit those working in the wool trade.
