Fashion that relies on sustainable materials could offer a more attractive deal to shoppers and prove to be more economically viable, especially if it is made in Great Britain.

This is according to an article by Anna Shepard in the New Statesman from her book How Green Are My Wellies?.

Dilys Williams, of the London College of Fashion's Centre for Sustainable Fashion, explained the economic downturn made people wary of the concept of owning lots of possessions.

"There's a drive to entice us to buy, but people are bored with their purchases almost before they get them home," she said.

According to a spokesperson for the centre, the institution is a "trailblazer" which urges companies to make sustainability as much a priority as business development.

Ms Shepard suggested that, with people attempting to spend less and becoming more disillusioned with the idea of disposable fashion, using sustainable materials could be the answer.

The London College of Fashion is the only college in the UK that specialises in fashion research, consultancy and education.
