YARN INDUSTRY MEETS FOR US SHEARING CONTEST
Those working in the yarn industry may have been interested in the first ever sheep shearing contest at the North Dakota State Fair in the US.
Farmers gathered to compete with one another as they trimmed the wool from a flock of sheep, KFYR-TV reports.
The large amount of wool collected during the event may be used for wool knitwear, but the publication explains it first needs to be treated to remove the lanolin present in the sustainable material.
While speed is an important part of the challenge, shearers must also ensure they pay attention to the quality of their work.
Competitor Chad Biel was quoted by the publication as saying: "While you're shearing, it's how you handle the sheep. [Judges are] going to look for all of the little knicks and cuts on the sheep."
And Mr Biel likened the experience of the flock to "taking off a wool sweater", as their heavy wool is removed.
The fair runs from July 23rd-31st and other attractions include fireworks, a heifer show and a military appreciation day.
